Frequently Asked Questions — Ball Nose End Mills

For a mirror-like finish on moulds, use a step-over of 3-5% of the ball diameter. For general finishing, 8-10% works well. For roughing, you can go up to 25-30% step-over. For example, with a 10mm ball nose end mill, a 0.5mm step-over (5%) gives an excellent surface finish with scallop height under 1 micron. The finer the step-over, the smoother the surface — but machining time increases significantly.
